??? serves as a public space for self-expression via nude portraiture. By eliminating the photographer and studio from the equation, participants can craft their own experience at their own pace and in their own environment. This autonomy leads to images that are far more intimate, authentic, and candid than what any photographer could achieve from a distance. While not every portrait may be a masterpiece, each image is one-of-a-kind and personal, revealing far more than just the female form; it’s the diversity of imagination that lends true originality to every piece. 

What motivates women to share their nude photographs online? The answer is simple: control. The opportunity to present themselves on their own terms, how they wish to be perceived, without the filter of someone else's perspective or the manipulations of Photoshop. For some contributors, this is an expression of pure artistry; for others, it represents a rebellious act, erotic expression, a longing to be desired, or a cathartic outlet. And for everyone, as we’re reminded daily, it is simply a lot of fun. Over the past 16 years of gathering portfolios, we have collected around one million raw images from over 7,000 contributors across more than 10,000 portfolios (not all of which are online yet). We attract more visitors than the Guggenheim, house a larger collection than the Louvre, and capture the cultural zeitgeist more keenly than the Tate. 

So, what does ISM offer? A remarkable body of work that is both diverse and revealing. Our contributors span from the Congo to California, ages 18 to 70 and beyond; art students to lawyers, the unemployed to airline pilots. We showcase both professional photographers and novices. They capture their images at home, in nature, and sometimes in bold acts of public nudity. In “Duet” portfolios, contributors include a friend or partner (male or female). Often, the background tells a story just as much as the subject; an empty packet tucked under the bed, personal belongings, or various items that comprise their surroundings. We celebrate beauty in all its forms, shapes, and colors—bodies with modifications, body hair and smooth skin, perfectly sculpted figures, and those bearing the marks of everyday life and momentous experiences. ISM also publishes videos; these are a bit more playful than the photo portfolios, allowing contributors freedom to create the short films they envision while naked. 

It is crucial to note that these individuals are not models. By definition, a ‘model’ suggests an ideal to aspire to; this concept can be offensive to those of us who may never achieve the flawless skin or sculpted forms that mainstream media and the porn industry promote as desirable. Most importantly, this marginalizes the intellect and overlooks the rich diversity of subcultures and mavericks that make humanity interesting. 

At the heart of ISM’s success is a strong ethical framework ensuring that all contributors can submit their portfolios with confidence, knowing they will be treated with respect and fairness. Additionally, they receive fair compensation for their work; every portfolio is fully paid for before publication, with further bonuses awarded for each viewer click.
